Thema:

Bridging the Knowledge gap in Electrochemical Energy Storage: Nanotechnology Engineering in Colombia

Datum:

04.10.21

Uhrzeit:

16:15

Ort:

Vortragender:

Dr. Esteban García-Tamayo

Assistant Professor, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Medellín, Colombia

Inhalt:

Electrochemical energy storage in general, and Li-ion batteries in particular, have been and will be pivotal in at least three paradigm shifts: the revolution of portable electronics and the Internet of Things, the expansion of electric vehicles use and the decarbonization of the grid by allowing renewable capacity firming (tackling intermittency issues). It is expected that the global lithium-ion battery demand will quadruple by 2030. Although the global supply chain for this industry is gearing up at full speed, environmental, geopolitical and technical issues might hinder this growth. In this context our young research laboratory in nanomaterials for energy storage (LIMAE) pursues three lines of research: active electrode materials, development of resources for energy storage and circular energy storage focusing on the lifecycle perspective. In this colloquium, I will provide an overview of Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (Medellín, Colombia) with a particular focus on the research being done at the Nanotechnology Engineering program. Then I will shift to my research topic where I will - after a general introduction to Li-ion battery technology - share some examples of actual projects such as for example micro/nano fiber active materials for electrodes synthesized by electrospinning, the production of bacterial nanocellullose from biowaste as energy storage material, and lifecycle evaluation of the Li-ion technology.

Kolloquium Mathematische Physik

Thema:

Random matrices, spin glasses, and machine learning

Datum:

23.07.21

Uhrzeit:

16:15

Ort:

ZOOM/Konferenzschaltung

Vortragender:

Jon Keating

Oxford University

Inhalt:

I will describe some problems relating to machine learning and their connections to random matrix theory and spin glasses. These connections give a mathematical framework for understanding in qualitative terms the effectiveness of certain algorithms that are important in machine learning, but developing them into precise models remains a major challenge. I will reflect on the different roles played by models in computer science and physics, focussing on those involving random matrices.

Machine Learning for Thermodynamic Observables in Lattice Field Theories

Datum:

06.07.21

Uhrzeit:

14:15

Ort:

Online, via ZOOM

Vortragender:

Lena Funcke

Perimeter Institute, Ontario, Canada

Inhalt:

In this talk, I will discuss how applying machine learning techniques to lattice field theory is a promising route for solving problems where Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are problematic. More specifically, I will show that deep generative models can be used to estimate thermodynamic observables like the free energy, which contrasts with existing MCMC-based methods that are limited to only estimate free energy differences. I will demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for two-dimensional $\phi^4$ theory and compare it to MCMC-based methods in detailed numerical experiments.
